There seems to be a lot of anguish these days about the rights of voters and whether those rights are being squashed.
05/07/12
I was listening to Paul W. Smith on the radio the other morning. He was talking to L. Brooks Patterson, Oakland County's executive, who announced that he's running for yet another term. Oakland is well served by him, and I don't envy the Democrat who runs against him.

A few days ago, there was a great big story in The New York Times about a lot of alleged bribery and corruption on the part of Wal-Mart de Mexico and its conduct in Mexico.

There seems to be no question that the U.S. economy is slowly but surely improving.
04/16/12
Somehow, everyone seems to have signed off on the consent agreement, some more reluctantly than others.

Last week, there were a lot more people who knew that Thursday was Opening Day for the Detroit Tigers than folks who knew something was supposed to happen with the city and the state.
04/01/12
The drop dead date is Thursday. By that date, everyone has to agree on what's going to happen in the city of Detroit.

Our governor was in Europe last week talking up Michigan as a great place for investment. But you know the lead topic of conversation during each meeting had to be about Detroit. Not a very pretty way to try to sell Michigan.

01/29/12
My guess is that few if any of the elected members of the Detroit City Council are too happy about the changes that await them this fall.
01/22/12
Last week, our still-pretty-new governor made his second State of the State address in Lansing.
01/15/12
Last week, a circuit judge decided to throw Matty Moroun in jail.
01/08/12
When was the last time someone asked you how you were going to vote?
01/01/12
It wasn't that long ago when we had Roger Penske take on the task of bringing the Super Bowl to Detroit. It was a great success and gave the city some great press.
12/18/11
Last week, the federal government threw the monkey wrench into Detroit's planned light-rail system that was proposed to run from downtown north on Woodward Avenue to Eight Mile Road.
12/11/11
Folks who have been long-time readers of Crain's know very well of the theory of fruitcakes and why we only have around seven fruitcakes to take care of the entire world.
12/04/11
Last week, the politicians and the labor leaders showed up to join forces and stand behind the mayor in declaring that they were in charge and were going to do what has to be done to right the financial ship of Detroit.
11/27/11
It is time for Detroit to have an emergency financial manager.
11/20/11
It's been a few days since Mayor Dave Bing made his announcement about the sorry financial shape of the city of Detroit.
