McGregor Fund makes $1.23 million in grants

The McGregor Fund in Detroit approved $1.23 million in grants for the second quarter of this year.

Of the total, $620,000 will go to support the operations of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Michigan Opera Theatre, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit and Mosaic Youth Theatre.

Other grants supporting human services and organizations or initiatives providing other public benefit include:

• $300,000 to Forgotten Harvest Inc. in Oak Park for expansion of its food rescue efforts.

• $87,000 to Detroit-based Gleaners Community Food Bank to fund two new staff positions and a project to enroll eligible individuals and families for the state benefits program, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

• $80,000 to Family Service Inc. in Detroit to fund a program to link the homeless in downtown Detroit with community programs, emphasizing mental health services.

• $30,000 to Freedom House in Detroit to fund emergency human services for refugees, including shelter, counseling and referrals and assistance with permanent settlement.

• $30,000 to Detroit Executive Service Corps in Southfield to support programs that provide free management assistance to nonprofit agencies.

• $35,000 to the Lansing-based Michigan League for Human Services to support research and advocacy directed at preserving and strengthening the social safety net in Michigan.

• $50,000 to University Cultural Center Association in Detroit for development of a new community garden in Midtown Detroit.
