The next go-round for Fashion in Detroit, a twice-annual fashion show launched Oct. 1-2 at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, will be in the city of Detroit.
Organizers have signed a contract to hold the next show March 19-20 at Eastern Market's newly constructed Shed 3, said Lians Jadan, a Royal Oak-based fashion photographer on Fashion in Detroit's executive committee.
In an effort to court the public rather than industry insiders, the event will take place on Friday and Saturday, rather than Thursday and Friday.
“We initially wanted it to be just an industry event, but the industry here isn't as strong as it will be,” Jadan said. “We're making it so people who aren't in the industry can still make it, and it will create a much larger vibe when we do it this way.”
Founded by former “Project Runway” contestant Joe Faris, a Birmingham native, the inaugural show featured designs by New York-based Betsey Johnson and Peter Soronen, as well as by Kid Rock's Made in Detroit clothing line and Dearborn-based Carhartt Inc., a workwear maker.
The charity for the March event will be Oak Park-based Forgotten Harvest.
Though lawmakers aren't usually known for their style, Fashion in Detroit is also planning a fashion show for Jan. 27 at the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing.
The one-hour event, slated to take place before lawmakers go into session, will include local designers like Ferndale-based Femilia Couture, Jadan said.
With Detroit and the state at large involved in efforts to attract creative professionals and industries, Jadan said, the show will give lawmakers “a small taste of what's to come.”
“Maybe we'll spice up their wardrobes a little bit,” he added.
